PASSPORT INFORMATION
PASSPORT RENEWALS / NEW PASSPORTS (ADULTS)
REQUIREMENTS
To be able to obtain an Italian passport for adult applicants:
- You must be an Italian citizen.
- You must be enrolled in our Los Angeles AIRE database (the registry of Italians living abroad).
- You must reside in our consular jurisdiction of Southern California, New Mexico, Arizona, or Nevada (operating under the main consulate of Los Angeles for these regions).
GENERAL INFORMATION
- Please do NOT make an appointment for renewal if the passport date of expiration is beyond six months as we cannot process your request.
- Locally, we can capture your biometric data, which are then sent digitally to the LA consulate.
- You do NOT need to go to the LA consulate if you make an appointment in SD.
- You can then send your application, payment, and other required documents directly to the LA consulate by postal service.
What to bring to your San Diego appointment:
- Pictures: Two (2) printed passport-size photos to be digitized in our office
- Pevious passport: (if applicable)
- AIRE: Confirmation of AIRE registration; current address must match what is in the database — FAST IT platform to obtain AIRE confirmation: Access Web Page →
- NOTE: We cannot process your request without AIRE confirmation.
What you need to mail to Los Angeles AFTER your San Diego appointment:
APPLICANTS WITH DUAL CITIZENSHIP (ITALIAN AND AMERICAN):
- Passport application form – (download pdf)
- Two (2) passport-size photos (the same photos you bring to SD, not two additional photos)
- Signature card (provided by SD office)
- Previous Italian passport (if applicable)
- COPY of US passport (page with passport holder’s information AND signature)
- COPY of US Naturalization Certificate (required only for Italian citizens who were naturalized as United States citizens after birth)
- COPY of Consular Report of Birth Abroad (required only for United States Citizens born outside of the US)
- Consent form from other parent (if you have children under 18 years old) – (download pdf)
- COPY of minor(s) birth certificates (if applicable)
- Mailing consent form – (download pdf)
- Passport fee (cashier’s check/money order ONLY; payable to ‘Consulate General of Italy’) – (view fee schedule – Note: Correct fee is in bold and in USD – Rilascio Art. 27 A + B)
- USPS Priority Mail only (no FedEx, no UPS); two priority mail envelopes; one pre-paid envelope with your return address
- Send everything to Consulate General of Italy, 1900 Avenue of the Stars, Ste. 1250, Los Angeles, CA, 90067
APPLICANTS THAT ARE ONLY ITALIAN CITIZENS:

- Signature card (provided by SD office)
- Previous Italian passport (if applicable)
- COPY of Visa or Green Card issued after August 16th, 1992. (If these documents cannot be provided, the applicant will have to provide a US Immigration declaration confirming the applicant never became an American citizen or show the US entry stamp on the passport. Without the above, no passport will be issued.)

PLEASE NOTE REGARDING MINORS:
If you have minor children, regardless of whether the passport is for you or your child/children, you will need to have a consent form completed by the other parent. The parental consent is ALWAYS necessary even if the applicant is one of the parents and not the minor. The consent cannot be older than six (6) months. Please also provide a photocopy of the minor(s) birth certificate(s).
- If other parent is a citizen of Italy or the European Union: The consent form signed by the other parent must include a photocopy of his/her Italian or EU passport (page with passport holder’s information AND signature).
- If other parent is NOT a citizen of Italy or the European Union: The signature on the consent form must be authenticated either by a notary public OR by an honorary consul.
- If other parent is deceased: Please provide a photocopy of the death certificate of the deceased parent.
PASSPORT RENEWALS / NEW PASSPORTS (MINORS UNDER 12)
Minors Under 12: Fingerprints are not required. Simply mail your documents to the Los Angeles consulate. 12 years and older require fingerprints.
